August 2010: Greensburg Alliance Church, Greensburg, PA

Greensburg Alliance Men minister in four areas: Men "Under Construction" is a men's Bible study that meets every Tuesday morning at 6:30 AM. We are currently studying Ephesians. Our focus in on equipping men to glorify God by growing in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. Second is Partners in Prayer. This is a group of men that meet every Sunday morning to pray for worship services classes and the people. Third is the monthly men's breakfast that meets every second Saturday at 8:00 AM. These breakfasts provide opportunities for fellowship, encouragement and time in the Word. We meet at a local restaurant. Fourth is our recreational ministry. This ministry provides a great chance for fellowship and outreach to the men in the community and those who do not participate in the other ministries. Recreational activities include softball, golf and basketball. For more information contact Alexander Graziani at 724-787-6520.

July 2010: Faith Alliance Church, Sidney, MT

Several men attended a No Man Left Behind Leadership training conference in December of 2008 as well as a District Advance with Rod Hadley that same year.

We were convinced that men are the key to healthy families and to a healthy church.  On the whole we were not satisfied with the results we were experiencing in our ministry to men in our church through the traditional Sunday School and Mid-week prayer meeting format.

We held our own men's leadership retreat in the Spring of 2009, one of our goals was for each one of us to be in an accountable relationship with one other man by June.  It took most of us, about 6 men, till the fall to actually connect with one other man on a regular and intentional basis.

Today we have 12 men who are meeting one on one with other men for the soul purpose of coming alongside each other to help us become better husbands, fathers, and godly men in the workforce.  Each man has expressed the benefit this has been in his own life, now we are looking for opportunities to help get more men connected in such life giving, life changing relationships with other men.

We still encourage men to attend Sunday School and all the other ministries the church offers, but we are really beginning to see the fruit of 'iron sharpening iron' as men meet with other men in accountable relationships.

At this point we do not have any set material to use.  I am going through the book "Halftime" by Bob Buford with my partner.  Other men are using the questions Rod Hadley gave us on business cards.  This is where there are a set of questions, usually they only ask a couple of these each time they meet.

It is exciting to see how the men who have now experienced the benefits of accountability really want to get other men involved in this same type of relationship.  I am excited to see where our men will be in a couple more years. For more information contact Pastor Paul Turek, fac@midrivers.

June 2010 Evanston Alliance Church, Evanston, WY

At Evanston Alliance Church our vision is to have our men follow hard after God.  Equipping them with God's Word to maturity and enabling them to be spiritual leaders in their church and in their homes.  One of the ways we are meeting that vision, over the past few months, is by a monthly men's night.  We have a 15 minute devotional, focused on being the spiritual leader of the home, then a manly meal together.  The evening is ended with a tips and techniques segment.  Some of these segments have included ammunition reloading, basic handgun techniques, and most recently a mini tutorial on golf basics and getting your golf game ready for spring.

During the summer months the men participate in many outdoor activities.  A men's and co-ed softball team, two trap shooting teams, golf tournaments, and a great event where we camp, fish and fling some arrows.

Several of the men in the church have an accountability partner that meet together on a weekly basis.  We encourage the Proverbs 27:17 approach of iron sharpening iron. Many of our men are also involved in our Care Group ministry or Covenant Group ministry.  Both of these ministries are deeply committed to disciple making.

The mission of the EAC men's ministry is to have men know Christ deeply, reflect Christ authentically, and to reproduce Christ intentionally.

Our key verse is 2 Timothy 1:7 - For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.

May 2010: Leading by Example, Cheyenne Alliance Church, Cheyenne, WY

Cheyenne Alliance Church is a fellowship of about one hundred fifty members with a moderately active Men's Group that has been active in a variety of ways through the last few years.  We meet weekly on Wednesday for a lay-led Bible study that ministers to about twelve to fifteen men.  Once a month we have a Men's breakfast with twenty to thirty men attending. We have a short lesson and updates on possible activities through the month that others may be interested in.  We have two men that lead several short term work teams around the Rocky Mountain District and internationally with focus typically on Africa, Mexico and Russia.  We have seasonal events like 'Wild Beast Feasts" with a wide variety of wild game cuisine. We also have annual camp outs often engaging the dads and sons focusing on specific themes related to the Bible, lifestyle, or hunting and fishing skills.  We also have men who are enlisted periodically to help with minor car repair or household maintenance for single moms who need help but are strapped financially.  Our men also participate in the annual District Men's Advance and Men's Retreats which are separate events with similar focus.  Healthy leadership and examples of men's involvement come from our pastoral staff and that makes a world of difference in the draw of men into our various ministries.  Leading by example, what a concept.

March 2010: Men Sharpening Men, Cary Alliance Church, Cary, NC.

Our vision for Men Sharpening Men, the men's ministry at Cary Alliance, is to be a passionate community of transformed men, encouraging one another to grow in Christ.  We seek to accomplish this through the four pillars of our men's ministry:

1. Studying, understanding, and applying God's Word.
We have a weekly Bible study, which includes both teaching and small group discussion.  Recent topics have included "A Man and his Work," "Characteristics of a Godly Man" and "The Truth Project."  We also had 60 men attend the South Atlantic District men's retreat, benefiting from great teachers such as Josh McDowell and Crawford Loritts.

2. Serving others within the Church and community.
Our "Men in Service" team comes together to perform routine home maintenance and handy-man type projects for widows, single mothers and missionaries who are home on furlough.  For larger projects we often work with our "clients" to solicit and evaluate bids from contractors, and then help monitor the contractor's work.

3. Actively seeking God's will and lifting up others through prayer.
We have groups of men that commit to pray during our Sunday morning services, seeking God's blessing upon the church and for those worshipping during the service.  We also have a group of retired men who meet early each Thursday morning to pray for one another and the church.

4. Developing authentic, lasting relationships with Christian men for both fellowship and accountability.
We plan a variety fellowship and outreach events.  One of our staples is, of course, a Saturday morning breakfast every-other-month, which includes a speaker or testimony.  Last summer we held a father/child night at a Durham Bulls baseball game... nearly 70 people attended, and many of our men invited unchurched friends to join us.  Other events included movie nights, golf outings and sponsoring our annual church-wide pig pickin'.  We also have active small groups that meet weekly for fellowship and accountability.

Last year our leadership team worked Patrick Morley's "No Man Left Behind" book.  Through this study, God led us to start a discipleship program among our men. We also invited Tom Sefik, an Alliance Pastor from First Alliance Church in Port Charlotte, FL and author of "Catalyst," to both speak to our men about the importance of discipleship and help our leadership team think through the best way to launch this effort in 2010.

February 2009: Missoula Alliance Church, Missoula, MT.

Our goal with the men's ministry in Missoula is to help our men succeed in life by having fun times together and taking the Word of God to heart.  We believe that men basically want four things in life: they want to be good husbands, they want to be good fathers, they want success in the work place and they want to have fun in recreation.

Our Wednesday morning Daybreak Men's Bible study and prayer time is a mid-week encouragement for the men to be "the light" in their work place.   We pray for men who have jobs and some who are struggling to find a job.  This year we completed most of the book of Proverbs in a study of the principles of life.  The men have made great contributions to each other's lives as they have been open and transparent in sharing their failures and successes, the younger learning from the older in many of the discussions.

One of the recreational activities we have enjoyed over the years is our father-daughter and father- son campouts.  We do one of each, in the summer and in the winter.  In the winter we rent a cabin that is near an ice fishing lake, a major ski area, a tubing/toboggan hill and a natural hot springs.  It is a blessing to have all of these activities in the same general area.  This has been a great time of dad's bonding with their kids and an environment for the men to swap stories of hunting, fishing and other tales.   The men really do get to know each other more fully in the fresh surroundings of the great outdoors.

Throughout the year there are two or three men's conferences where we have corporate challenges and instruction in the Word.  And on an individual level there are many of the men that meet one-on-one for mentoring and discipleship.   Our prayer is that we will become more effective in reaching the lost in Missoula and see them grow to full faith in Christ. Pastor Fred Jones,  406-251-3983.

November 2009: First Alliance Church, McCalla, AL

Our men's fellowship began in 2000. We meet on the third Thursday each week at 6:30 PM. We often have a speaker. On July 17 we had Judge Roy Moore who gave his testimony and gave us a real answer as to the case against him as he took a stand on the Ten Commandments. When we do not have a speaker, one of our men gives his testimony. Attendance at these meetings range from 50-55. The fellowship has been interdenominational. As a result, we spun off a men's fellowship at Central Park United Methodist Church and River Road Baptist Church in Birmingham, Healing Waters Church in Alabaster, AL.  For more information, contact Ed Olvey at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. September 2009 Living Hope Church, Huntsville, AL.

Seven years ago, we began focusing on building a cadre of mature and mission-minded men in our church through one-to-one discipling relationships.  Our goal has been to equip these men to be able to engage in one-to-one evangelism and discipling of others in their natural sphere of influence (family members, friends, neighbors, coworkers, etc).  In order to accomplish this, we've created a 3-stage discipling strategy.

Stage One: The 'entry-level' phase of our discipleship training consists of an eight-lesson Bible study series on the 'Basics of the Faith' (the Word, God, Sin, Jesus, Salvation, etc.), as well as a three-session class on our C&MA roots, the history of Living Hope Church, and the mission of making disciples.  Our purpose in covering all this is to ensure that those coming into our fellowship share both our message and mission, and that every new member receives basic training that enables them to understand the Christian message and be able to communicate it effectively to others.  Very importantly - these 'entry-level' training materials (especially the Bible studies) are gone through on an individual basis, one at a time with each man during scheduled discipleship meetings each week.  Although It may take anywhere from twelve to sixteen weeks to complete the material in this format, we've found that those who have learned it in a one-to-one discipling context are not only more grounded in their faith than other men, but are also more capable of sharing that faith with others in a similar one-to-one setting.

Stage Two:  At the end of the 'entry-level' study, we encourage each man to enter an year-long phase of 'intermediate discipleship' aimed at strengthening their faith, furthering their sanctification, and fostering their ministry skills.  This is done through discipling relationships in a small group setting with other men who have agreed to meet together regularly for encouragement and accountability.  The goal of this process is that, by the end of the year of meeting together, these disciples will have become effective disciplers of others.

Stage Three:  At the end of a year of 'intermediate-level' training, we have a pretty good idea which men are ready to move into the third and final stage of our discipleship training - our School of Ministry.  This entails an additional couple years of intensive discipling with the leaders of the church, with the goal of equipping new leaders for ministry.  Especially in this phase, our goal is quality rather than quantity.

Over all, the results we've seen have been very encouraging!  Despite some set-backs, over the years we've seen a steadily growing number of godly men rising up in our church - men who are passionate about living out their faith and making a difference in the lives of others!

August 2009 - Ensley Alliance Church. Pensacola, FL.

We launched our men's ministry at Ensley in January 2008. There are about 35 men in the church or who call Ensley Their church home. Ten men meet on the first Wednesday of each month. We have a brief devotional, a time of sharing, a mission field focus and prayer. We have quarterly men's breakfasts, two of them in conjunction with a workday and two with a speaker. The average attendance at the breakfasts is 15. Our focus is on building relationships through projects. Right now most of our projects are around the church. In the future we plan to assist members of the congregation and our neighborhood. We encourage our men to attend district men's retreat. We have increased attendance over the past three years. Our mission project for 2009 is to assist Barry and Terry Newman purchase a vehicle for their work in Mali, West Africa. We encourage the men to collect pocket change and periodically deposit it in a large jar in the church foyer. At the end of June we had collected $700 toward a 2009 goal of $1000. (Hmmmm ... we need to work on setting goals!) We began a men's small group on Saturday evenings last January. We are studying the men of the Old Testament. We hosted a Valentines dinner in February. We are planning a workday in Waveland MS in September. Our leadership team used the Blueprint model for developing our ministry. We are looking forward to building upon that with a No Man Left Behind Conference this Fall. For more information contact Les Tripp at 850-375-9843. Ensley Men: Leading the Way!

June 2009 - Paradise Alliance Church, Paradise, CA.

Growing Godly Guys (G3) Men's Ministries at Paradise Alliance Church began in January 2008 with a small group of guys attending Man in the Mirror's No Man Left Behind seminar in Florida.  Attending that seminar helped us come up with our name, G3, and our purpose of disciples making disciples.

The core of our ministry is our Men's Bible Study on Wednesday nights. Bible study consists of a 30-minute teaching by Tim Bolin, our pastor to men, followed by 45-minute round table small group discussions. Typically on a Wednesday night, 80-100 men attend.  We have 16 tables set up with each table discussion facilitated by one of our Allies (round table small group leaders).

Events and outreaches we do on an ongoing or annual basis are: Monday Night Football, Clay Shooting Competition, Wilderness Retreat and a Golf Tournament. Also, we have a softball team that participates in our town's league.

Also within G3 is its own mission's ministry, Alliance Kingdom Builders, which assists people in need "here, there, and everywhere." Alliance Kingdom Builders purpose is to advance God's Kingdom throughout our community, country, and worldwide, by providing spiritual and physical assistance for those in need according to God's Word. Over the past two years, this group has gone to Mexico to build a 3000 sq ft house (1500 sq ft upstairs used as a home for a pastor's family in Mexico and the 1500 sq ft downstairs used as storage for Azusa Pacific's Mexico Outreach), a large commercial-sized kitchen, and a bathroom at sites our youth annually minister at during spring break.  This year, a team of men have partnered with the Bostons in Paraguay to build a church and also to help a young widow in our community rebuild her fire-damaged home. May 2009 - Sunnyside Alliance Church, Secretary, MD.

In 2004-5 the Wednesday night discipleship group studied Wild at Heart by John Eldredge and it sparked a trip to Washington D.C. to visit the war memorials.  One of our men fought in the Pacific in WWII.  The Eldredge study also sparked a trip to Montana for hiking, fishing and rafting.

Our men's ministry is a key ministry in the church. Len Ruffner, the National Director, conducted a Blueprint Seminar in September. As a result we are considering a number of activities that provide opportunities to impact the lives of men for Christ. These include: A sportsman outreach.  A Wild Game Dinner with special speakers and door prizes. A men's retreat for Alliance churches on the Eastern Shore. Our Discipleship on Wednesday nights is expanding to other nights and other small groups.

We are exploring several options for our monthly breakfasts.  We moved some of them to outside locations.  In November we honored our wives with a couple's breakfast. We are looking into serving at a homeless shelter in the area. We hosted a Valentine's Day banquet for our girl friends and wives. We have a strong carpentry aid program where men do service work for pastors, widows, the elderly, and others in need.

March 2009 - The Alliance Church, Portsmouth, VA.

The goal of Portsmouth Alliance Men is to disciple every man in our church. Our motto is No Man Left Behind based on the book from Man In he Mirror. In 2008, 22 men come out each Saturday for a Bible Study on the  Book "A Quiet Strength" by Tony Dungy.  We finished the study with a fish fry lunch and fellowship. This winter we will start another study based on the book "3:16" by Max Lucado.
Each week our men are engaged in several areas. We have prayer meetings on Wednesday at 6:30 AM, on Sunday at 9 AM and on Sunday evening at 6 PM. Each Monday morning about 15 men gather a local restaurant for breakfast and fellowship. Upcoming events are a lunch for all men to meet with our new associate pastor, Doug Ellenberger.  We hosted a men's banquet during missions conference in January. For more information, contact Rim Rodier at 757-465-4118.

February 2009 - The Men of Blanchard, Blanchard Alliance Church, Wheaton, IL.

We offer our men at least four different "tracks" for discipleship in small groups mornings on a weekly basis.
We also have seven SWEAT Teams. ,"SWEAT" (Serving with Enthusiasm and Teamwork) is the new platform for the men's ministry at Blanchard. There is a large unmet need in our church for many simple yet critical tasks which require some "SWEAT". Following are key areas of need:

  • ESPRIT (single moms ministry). Help entertain kids while their moms attend their support group twice a month.
  • Sunday Greeters. Have a smile and a handshake required.
  • Sunday Service Ushers.
  • Monthly Communion Preparation.
  • Sunday Coffee Stewards.
  • Movers. We get approximately 6 requests per year for moving assistance.
  • Handymen. Respond to requests for help from members of the congregation.

We conduct an annual men's retreat in mid November, It begins Friday evening and ends at noon on Sunday. For more information about our men's ministry, see our webpage or contact Dave Scavotto at (630) 653-1066.

December 2008 - Gateway Fellowship Church, Sacramento, CA.

"Our Men's Ministry is continuing to grow. We have weekly meetings we call Brotherhoods that meet at different times. Each consists of 3 to 6 men. The main focus is to share our lives with each other thru studying a book together like Wild at Heart. Each Brotherhood also does activities together, hunting, sail-boating, fishing, computer games like Halo, snow boarding, etc.

Each Brotherhood chooses what it wants to do. We encourage the men to commit to six months at a time and then take a break, start a new group or stay with the original group.

We tried to have a monthly men's fellowship, but it was just too much so we changed it to every 3 months. We have a guest speaker. Last summer we held a men-only BBQ and then in August we sponsored a Church Family BBQ.

We started a yearly retreat in 2007 and we are calling it our Boot Camp for the Soul. We are using Wild at Heart Boot Camp. Activities at the retreat included paintball and other activities. In 2007 it was one night and a day. This year it was Friday night through Sunday until 1:00 PM. We had 51 men this year. We will be having it every year in May.

We have also started what we call Point-men over different parts of our Ministry. For example, two or three men are Point-men over our Brotherhoods. They are not just leaders but supporters of each Brotherhood." For more information contact Mike Swain at 916-254-0247.

November 2008 Altoona Alliance Church, Altoona, PA

We have an active alliance men's group...doing activities/ministries in a number of areas. A few brief examples:

  • Missions - The men have sponsored/run a Golf Tournament for past 4 years...with the funds raised used to send folks from our church on short term missions trips - very successful
  • Evangelism - We have had 4 Hunting/Sports Banquets with primary purpose of reaching the lost with Gospel of Christ. We have seen a number of men and youth accept Christ as Savior at these events.
  • Fellowship/Relationship building - Each August we have a men and sons STEAK OUT...were we grill steaks and have an evening of fun and fellowship.
  • Service/Mercy/Helps - The men do home projects for widows, elderly, special needs. Also have had "free car washes" for community.
  • Bible Study - a number of times we have had special training events on parenting, fathers, husbands...etc.
  • Hot Dog outreach - Cook hot dogs and giving out for free on a Wednesday or Sunday evening in our city.

September 2008 - Atlanta Road Alliance Church, Seaford, DE.

Men's ministry here for many years was burnt pancakes once a month on Saturday mornings with a short devotion by a guest or member of the church. No real challenge...no real excitement...A team of 4 men knew there had to be more to a ministry to men!  They gathered weekly for 2 years to pray for direction, got to know each other and each other's heart for men and became a Band of Brothers.  They now serve together as a team of men who care about the men in their church fellowship and larger community.  The team follows the Man in the Mirror model: momentum gathering and building and small groups.  The team has hosted Success and Rewired seminars, initiated men's outings, facilitated Friday morning Man in the Mirror Bible study using Morley's DVDs, and made Wednesday night small group Bible and topical studies the foundation of our ministry to men. Regretfully, men only go as far as they want to go in their faith.  Many of the men, who attend the larger events, also disciple men one-on-one over breakfast or lunch.  Our goal is to bump (encourage) a man along in his faith. A life in Christ for a man is joy filled, exciting and challenging.  We want our events to challenge men to grow as believers, husbands, fathers and men in the market place with the ultimate goal of bringing Glory to the One Who makes it ALL possible!

One last point, we agree with Morley - men's ministry is trench work.  It takes 10 years to build a thriving and surviving  ministry to men...not 10 months or 2 years  or 5 years.  We are in year 5 and just now seeing some depth, growing relationships and firm direction.  Prayer and patience are the watch words.  Be ready for a long haul..with God driving the plan! August 2008 - Grace Alliance Church, Lexington, NC.

There are about 45 men in our congregation. Between 12-15 men meet regularly on the first Saturday of each month. We serve a full, hot breakfast, share prayer concerns, pray and have a devotional study. This year we are working through the second of Jim Cymbala's books, "Fresh Faith". Cymbala's main focus is prayer. It has been fascinating to watch how God reveals to each man, in a unique and different way the role and importance of prayer in their lives.

Men, as with all believers, grow at different rates, and watching the men of Grace grow as God leads has been both extraordinary and frustrating. We have tried various formats for our meetings and the Saturday breakfast seems to work best. We have also discovered that "if you feed them they will come.

We keep reminding ourselves that it is not about the number of men that attend, it is about the Holy Spirit working in a man's life to draw him closer to Christ. Seeing the change in a man's life as he yields to the Spirit is what ministry to men is all about. For more information contact Len Ruffner at 336-247-0152.
